FORZA VIRTUS !
When Wrexham flags were seen flying as far away as Verona in Italy, even the most passive of football observers would have needed to do a double take to make sure they weren't seeing things.
This was no optical illusion however, and following several sightings at one particular ground, that of Virtus Verona, it quickly became apparent that it was no fluke either.
So when a banner depicting the red and blue colours of Virtus Verona was seen at the Racecourse in pre-season, we just had to find out what was going on!
Virtus Verona are Verona's third biggest club behind italian Serie A side Chievo and Hellas Verona in Serie C1, otherwise known as the Liga Pro Prima Divisione.
Located in the Borgo Venezia district of the city Virtus Verona currently play their football in Serie D, in what is the fifth tier of the italian league. Serie D is divided between 9 regional divisions with Virtus Verona contesting Girone C, finishing last season in 15th place.
Head coach Luigi Fresco is also the clubs chairman, a unique case in italian football, and has been in charge of team affairs for 24 years.
Supporters of the club spread a strong anti-racism message in a league where it is a common problem on the terraces. This message is shouted loudest by the main section of thir fans known as The Ultras (Virtus Fans), who can be heard at the Centro Sportivo Gavagnin where Virtus play their home games.
After a Wrexham fan identifiable to followers of the Red Passion website as John (Andy) Snowdon, met the Ultras (Virtus Fans) leading member at a music festival, the two kept in touch. Soon The Ultras (Virtus Fans) requested the Wrexham banner so that they could fly it in support of their anti-racism campaign.
John (Andy) has since returned the compliment with his own banner in recognition of this, ensuring that Virtus Verona are now supported from our terraces as we are from theirs.
Now we are hoping to take this blossoming relationship one step further as we look to cement a union with our new found friends by following their fortunes throughout the season, and supporting them in their own bid for promotion and in extending their anti-racism message.
We will cover their results and league standings week by week and hope that any luck we can bring them will also rub off on ourselves, as we wish our new foster team all the best for the season ahead!

Quando le bandiere del Wrexham sono state viste sventolare così lontano come in quel di Verona (Italia), anche il più passivo degli osservatori del nostro Wrexham ha avuto bisogno di una seconda verifica per essere sicuro di aver visto bene.
Non si trattava di una illusione ottica, riguardando infatti tutte le immagini e sequenze fotografiche degli spalti del campo della Virtus Verona ci si rendeva conto di non aver preso un abbaglio.
E quando poi uno striscione dai colori rosso blu (colori sociali della Virtus Verona) è stato visto sventolare sugli spalti del Racecourse (lo stadio del Wrexham) nel corso delle partite pre campionato, abbiamo avuto bisogno di capire cosa realmente stava succedendo.
La Virtus Verona è il terzo club più grande della città di Verona dopo il Chievo (in serie A) e l'Hellas Verona (in Lega Pro Prima Divisione). Situata nel quartiere Borgo Venezia, la Virtus Verona gioca attualmente in Serie D, ovvero la quinta divisione del campionato italiano. La Serie D è suddivisa in 9 gironi regionali e la Virtus Verona gioca nel Girone C. Ha terminato l'ultimo campionato in quindicesima posizione.
Il Mister Luigi Fresco è anche il presidente del club da ben 24 anni (unico caso italiano).
I supporters del club diffondono un forte messaggio antirazzista visto che la piaga del razzismo è un problema purtroppo molto diffuso e frequente sugli spalti degli stadi italiani. Questo messaggio è gridato ancora più forte dal principale gruppo ultras (Virtus Fans) dagli spalti del Campo Gavagnin dove la Virtus Verona gioca le sue partite casalinghe.
Un noto tifoso del Wrexham, John (Andy) Snowdon (ben conosciuto sul forum del sito gallese Red Passion) incontrò tempo fa un membro dei Virtus Fans Verona ad un festival musicale rimanendone poi in contatto. Presto i Virtus Fans chiesero una bandiera del Wrexham a John (Andy) che fu ben contento di inviargliela anche a supporto della loro campagna antirazzista. Da allora quella bandiera durante le partite della Virtus Verona è sempre appesa nel loro settore dello stadio assieme ai loro stendardi.
John (Andy) ha pensato subito di contraccambiare il bellissimo gesto realizzando la sua bandiera rossoblu da portare alle partite del Wrexham, garantendo che da quel momento la Virtus Verona sarà sempre supportata e sostenuta sugli spalti dello stadio del Wrexham.
Ora speriamo che questa forte amicizia tra i due gruppi cresca, cementando così l'unione con i nostri nuovi amici italiani. Seguiremo le loro vicende durante la prossima stagione e li supporteremo nel loro messaggio di propaganda antirazzista.
Terremo costantemente informati i tifosi del Wrexham settimana per settimana sui risultati della Virtus Verona.
Sperando con tutto questo di portare una grande fortuna al team veronese cogliamo l'occasione per augurare alla Virtus Verona tutto il meglio per la nuova stagione.»
